- The vertical line test, VLT, is used on a coordinate plane to determine if a graph is a function.
- When a graph passes the VLT, the line only touches the graph at ONE point .
- When a function is present, the equation can be written in function notation f (x) .
- If function notation is used, you already know that the equation represents a function.
Example 1
Determine if the graphs are functions.
This is not a function because it fails the VLT.
This is a function because it passes the VLT.
