How-To Guide for Dice Games: Math Fluency Through Play

Purpose

Dice Games: Math Fluency Through Play is a supplemental math fluency practice resource designed to provide students with repeated opportunities to practice and reinforce mathematical skills. Through short, engaging games that use Math-U-See Activity Dice, students build accuracy, flexibility, and confidence while developing stronger number sense and strategy use.

The games are intentionally designed for repeated play, allowing students to revisit the same skills over time, notice patterns, refine strategies, and explain their thinking. Progress is demonstrated through improved reasoning, efficiency, and confidence rather than completion of a fixed sequence.

Note that this is not a full curriculum and does not replace core instruction. It is intended to be used alongside an existing math program as targeted practice, review, intervention, or enrichment, based on student need.

Structure

These Dice Games are individual games aligned to specific math concepts, not lessons or units. The games are designed to be used alongside the Math-U-See 10-Sided Activity Dice as targeted practice for skills students are actively developing. Each game follows a consistent structure that includes setup, a clear goal, gameplay, and opportunities for discussion and extension.

Each game includes the following:

  • A specific mathematical goal
  • Materials and preparation
  • Clear how-to-play directions
  • Discussion prompts to support reasoning and strategy
  • Optional extensions or variations
  • A printable game board to support gameplay or strategy tracking for some games.

Games may be revisited multiple times across days or weeks. Mastery is demonstrated through improved reasoning, accuracy, and efficiency—not through completion of a fixed sequence. During gameplay, observe student strategies and accuracy, use discussion prompts to check understanding, and adjust support or challenge as needed.
