Common Logs Solutions

  • The common logarithm has a    base of 10   . Recall that when the base is not written for a logarithm, it is understood to be 10.
  • It can be written as log10x or, most commonly,    log x   .

  • You can    estimate    the approximate value of a log without technology when you ask yourself:

    • “Ten to what power is    nearest    to the given argument?”

      or

    •    Between    which two whole numbers is the argument?”

Example 1

The approximate value of log 72 is between which two integers? To which integer is the value closest? Explain. Do not use technology.

Plan

Name the powers of 10 the log is between

Decide if the log is closer to the lower or higher power of 10

Explain

Implement

10x=72101=10102=100

Explain

The approximate value of log 72 is between    1 and 2   .
It is closer to    2 because 72 is closer to 100 than 10   .

Example 2

The approximate value of log1450 is between which two integers? Explain.

10x=1450102=1100103=11000

For log1450, x is between    –3 and –2    because 1450 is between 1100 and 11000.
