Mastery Check Solutions
Show What You Know
Two research teams are studying the habits of patrons at the Manheim Library on a selected Saturday in March.
Team X recorded the length of time each person spent at the library, the number of books they checked out, and whether each person was wearing glasses.
Team Z asked each person to name their favorite genre of books and share what they think is a reasonable fine for an overdue book per day.
- Name the population and sample.
Population: all patrons of the Manheim Library
Sample: people who visited on a Saturday in March
Note
Remember, the population is all patrons of the Manheim Library, not just the visitors on the research day.
- For Team X, name the type of study and whether the variables are categorical or quantitative.
Observational study
Time spent at the library: quantitative
Number of books checked out: quantitative
Wearing glasses: categorical
Note
Q: Why is wearing glasses categorical?
A: Because you are either in the group (category) that wears glasses or the group that does not wear glasses.
- For Team Z, name the type of study and whether the variables are categorical or quantitative.
Sample survey
Book genre: categorical
Book fine: quantitative
- Using the given information, create a study that a third research team, Team Y, could conduct at the Manheim Library about judging a book by its cover.
Sample: Team Y displays two copies of the same book, one with a colorfully designed cover and the other with a black-and-white cover. Each person who passes is asked which book they would prefer to read.
Note
Questions to ask once part D is completed:
What type of study did you create? Explain.
What are the variables? Are they categorical or quantitative?
Say What You Know
In your own words, talk about what you have learned using the objectives for this lesson and your work on this page.
Note
Restate the objectives of the lesson in your own words. If you are unable to restate the lesson objectives, go back and reread the objectives and then explain them.
- Identify a population and a sample in a scenario.
- Identify and categorize statistical variables.
- Name and/or explain the type of study being conducted.
