Concepts for Early Learning Lessons

Early Learning Lessons focus on developing early number sense through hands-on exploration, movement, conversation, and repeated play. Concepts are revisited across lessons and weeks to support understanding, confidence, and flexible thinking rather than mastery through a fixed sequence.

Concepts Practiced:

  • Counting objects accurately (0–9, with gentle introduction to 10)
  • Recognizing and writing numerals (0–9)
  • Matching numbers to groups of objects
  • Understanding zero as an empty set
  • Building and representing numbers using manipulatives
  • Comparing quantities using more, less, and same
  • Making and combining small groups
  • Noticing how numbers grow by “one more”
  • Identifying and extending simple patterns (AB and repeating patterns)
  • Connecting numbers to real-world objects and everyday environments
  • Explaining thinking using words, actions, drawings, or models
