Concepts for Early Learning Lessons
Early Learning Lessons focus on developing early number sense through hands-on exploration, movement, conversation, and repeated play. Concepts are revisited across lessons and weeks to support understanding, confidence, and flexible thinking rather than mastery through a fixed sequence.
Concepts Practiced:
- Counting objects accurately (0–9, with gentle introduction to 10)
- Recognizing and writing numerals (0–9)
- Matching numbers to groups of objects
- Understanding zero as an empty set
- Building and representing numbers using manipulatives
- Comparing quantities using more, less, and same
- Making and combining small groups
- Noticing how numbers grow by “one more”
- Identifying and extending simple patterns (AB and repeating patterns)
- Connecting numbers to real-world objects and everyday environments
- Explaining thinking using words, actions, drawings, or models
