Polynomial Parent Functions Solutions

Note

You can learn more about parent graphs in the More to Explore activity.

  • The    parent    function is the simplest form of any function.
  • Polynomial parent functions are named by the    degree    of the polynomial.
  • Looking at the graphs of parent functions will help you notice    trends    in the end behavior as well as the domain and range.
    • The domain is the set of all    input    values, or x-coordinates.
    • The range is the set of all    output    values, or y-coordinates (f (x)) in function notation).
  • The domain and range can be written using    interval    notation or    set-builder    notation.
    • Interval notation is one way to express    every element    of the domain or range.
      • Use parentheses ( ) for    open    points or    unbounded    numbers like infinity.
      • Use brackets [ ] for    closed    points or    bounded    numbers.
    • Set-builder notation uses    math shorthand    to define all values of the domain and range.

All equations of functions can be written using function notation f(x) or y.
