Functions Solutions

  • The    vertical line test, VLT,    is used on a coordinate plane to determine if a graph is a function.
  • When a graph passes the VLT, the line only touches the graph at    ONE point   .
  • When a function is present, the equation can be written in    function notation f (x)   .
  • If function notation is used, you already know that the equation    represents    a function.

Example 1

Determine if the graphs are functions.


  1. This is not a function because it fails the VLT.

  1. This is a function because it passes the VLT. 

Example 2

Write the equations with f in respect to x.

  1. y=3x+7fx=3x+7
  1. y=12x5 

    fx=12x5
